PAMELA FANNING Visual Arts
Biography
|
Born with a natural talent for the visual arts, Pam began her lifelong art career drawing on the walls and sidewalks of her North Vancouver neighbourhood. Her flare for drawing was recognized at a young age when Pam won first place drawing the vegetable department of the Shop Easy store in Edgemont Village. As a teenager, Pam took art classes at the Vancouver School of Art (now Emily Carr College of Art and Design) and later honed her craft with studies at the University of British Columbia (UBC). She attended UBC during the "Golden Age" of its art education program. During that time, her imagery and techniques benefitted greatly under the mentorship of professors such as Sam Black and Gordon Smith. Pam earned her Bachelor's Degree in Education, with a double art major, in 1972 and returned to UBC to complete a visual arts diploma in 1990. She obtained her Master of Arts degree in 1994 from Gonzaga University. A career teacher for 34 years, Pam mentored numerous students in various levels of the arts and nurtured her own career with several group shows between 1972 and 2006. Pam has a unique ability to intellectualize art; thus her work is not only a product of her talent, but also of the deliberate thought process behind her imagery. Proficient in many media, Pam prefers drawing, printmaking and, above all, acrylic painting. Now retired from teaching in Penticton, B.C., Pam finds her imagery and inspiration in the ecosystems, landscapes, and people of Western Canada. Her work reflects the contrasts and resilience of the land - particularly themes of life and death. |
